Breaking Barriers with Bow and Strings
Music is more than just sound, it’s a universal language, a bridge between cultures, and a powerful tool for change. Ghetto Classics, based in Nairobi, Kenya, understands this deeply. By harnessing the transformative power of music, it’s reshaping lives, empowering communities, and redefining what it means to thrive in urban neighbourhoods.
Many of Kenya’s vibrant communities are bursting with talent, yet opportunities for exposure and growth are limited. Ghetto Classics shines a spotlight on gifted musicians, composers, and performers who might otherwise remain unheard. From soulful jazz renditions to energetic Afrobeat rhythms, the initiative celebrates authentic local artistry while honouring the rich musical heritage of the region.

Founded in 2008 in the informal settlement of Korogocho on the outskirts of Nairobi, Ghetto Classics has grown from a small group of children learning instruments into a vibrant community movement. Its main centre operates in Korogocho, where hundreds of youths learn classical, jazz, and ensemble music that broadens their horizons beyond daily hardship.

Over time, the programme has expanded with multiple centres across Kenya to reach even more young people. In Nairobi it runs at Mukuru kwa Reuben, offering another hub of creativity and support, while in Mombasa, a satellite centre at Mikindani Primary School brings music education and community engagement to the coast. At its core, Ghetto Classics isn’t just about performances, it’s about impact. Music becomes a conduit for education, social awareness, and community development. Workshops and mentorship programs guide young artists in refining their craft while equipping them with essential life skills. Beyond talent, the initiative nurtures discipline, confidence, and collaboration among participants, helping them navigate both the music industry and their personal journeys.

Live events organized by Ghetto Classics transform local spaces into hubs of creativity and connection. Concerts, open air performances, and collaborative music sessions bring together people from diverse backgrounds, fostering unity and dialogue. These events have had a tangible impact, inspiring youth, promoting cultural pride, and creating economic opportunities for performers and local businesses alike.

The ultimate goal of Ghetto Classics is to create a sustainable ecosystem where music can thrive in underserved areas. By investing in local talent, providing platforms for exposure, and integrating social programs, the initiative is cultivating a generation of artists who are not only skilled performers but also agents of positive change in their communities.

The foundation is organising a charity golf tournament in support of the cause. By participating, partners directly contribute to:
1. Youth development and empowerment
2.Access to quality music education
3.Community upliftment and social inclusion
4.Support for families and underserved communities

Funds raised during the event go directly into sustaining music training programs and social welfare initiatives, ensuring that the impact is both immediate and long lasting.
